Mosquito-borne Chikungunya Virus Discovered in North Carolina Resident

RALEIGH – North Carolina health officials earlier this month confirmed the state’s first case of Chikungunya virus in a resident who recently travelled to the Caribbean. The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito.

No known cases have been acquired in North Carolina. The virus  has moved from East Africa, India and Western Pacific regions to the Caribbean, where more than 130,000 people have been infected.
